Girl Effect works on the deep-seated psychological drivers that influence adolescent girls’ decision-making, building their intrinsic motivation to act, to achieve sustainable behaviour change. 

Girl Effect is able to reach millions of girls, in more than 50 countries, by delivering their work via the technology girls use everyday, including mobile phones, TV and radio as well as pioneering developments in artificial intelligence, Interactive Voice Response (IVR), chatbot and mobile technology to find innovative ways to reach and engage girls more personally, at scale, and cost effectively. Girl effect works across the world in places where girls are marginalised and vulnerable, including Malawi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Indonesia, Tanzania and India. 

About the role

The Director, Social and Behavioural Change (SBC), will lead the ongoing development of Girl Effect’s technical approach to delivering social and behaviour change outcomes for girls, ensuring their programming is designed and implemented to have the greatest impact. The role holder will build and lead a small team to strengthen expertise across Girl Effect in applying social and behaviour change theory and practice: across their evidence, programme design, creative and partnership teams, both at the global level and in the countries where they work. The role holder will work within the Impact team, working closely with experts in gender, evidence and insights, TEGA (our participatory, digital-led research methodology) and safeguarding. 

The Director, SBC will contribute to the development of new partnerships with aligned organisations and funders, providing strategic inputs into programme design, and supporting the partnerships team to identify new opportunities to grow their work. They will build Girl Effect as a thought-leader in this space, and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the organisation, providing expert guidance to other team leaders and the Executive Team. The role will involve <20% international travel. 

This role could be based out of Mumbai, India or Nairobi, Kenya.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy and design: Lead the ongoing development of Girl Effect’s gendered SBC approach, including guiding the realisation of the strategy through communications programmes. Work collaboratively with digital, creative and evidence teams to produce cutting-edge products and approaches.
  • Team Management: Lead a small team globally (including consultants as necessary), and provide matrix management support to behaviour change leads in specific geographies and projects as needed. 
  • Mainstreaming and Capacity Building in SBC: Develop and lead the implementation of a strategy to strengthen Girl Effect’s SBC expertise globally.
  • Technical support: Lead the provision of technical SBC support to global teams, to maximise learning and integration of SBCC expertise into programming, including design, testing and learning. Quality assurance of their programming from an SBCC perspective. 
  • Partnerships: Support Development and Programmes teams to identify opportunities to work with aligned organisations and funders, and contribute to the preparation of concept notes and proposals. 
  • Thought leadership and representation: Stay on top of current SBCC thinking, and promote Girl Effect’s results and learning in the sector, as well as represent Girl Effect in external events, and in discussions with existing and potential partners.

Does this sound like you?

  • Degree in development studies or other relevant disciplines such as global health, anthropology, sociology, social psychology, etc. 
  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline is desirable 
  • Strong theoretical background in behavioural science, preferably from a multi-disciplinary lens. 
  • Extensive and proven leadership experience in the design and successful delivery of social and behaviour change communications programmes in a similar/comparable field (e.g. adolescent sexual and reproductive health programming), preferably programmes operating at scale and across multiple geographies.
  • Knowledge of Human Centric Design and/or Participatory Design Methods and tools, preferably with experience of behaviour centric design. 
  • Experience developing and executing mass communication strategies across TV, radio and digital channels.
  • Experience working in an environment of rapid growth and change with a clear understanding of emerging markets relevant to the business. 
  • Strong analytical ability, effective communicator, with the ability to synthesize and communicate complex theories, policies and multiple perspectives.
  • A passion for social change typically evidenced by a strong interest and prior experience applying creative approaches to social issues such as economic development, global health, education or the environment. 

Nice to have: 

  • Good understanding of gender-specific issues affecting adolescent girls 
  • Strong ability to present information in a concise, insightful, structured and provocative manner, both in written and oral forms, preferably including track record of publications in the sector. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working in a multicultural team 
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills
