Job description

M-KOPA is looking to welcome an Analytics Engineer (mid - senior level) to their Analytics Team. The Analytics Engineer will multiply the effectiveness of everyone in the wider data team by creating, sharing, and making easy the data systems that workflows are built on, whilst contributing positively to team culture. Our vision is to be the smartest company in Africa and you will play a crucial part in that.

With over a million customers across multiple geographies, our data is essential to both everyday operations and business decisions. Analytics engineering at M-KOPA is new and evolving, sitting at the intersection of Data Science and Analytics, Reporting and Data Engineering. You'll sit inside a small team with autonomy to improve the data team's workflows. Analytics Engineering is a relatively new field, so we welcome applicants from Data Analysts who tend towards repeatability and automation, to Data Engineers who are interested in the business domain, Data Scientists who understand that clean data is more important than another 1000 epochs, or Software Engineers who want the perfect entry into the data space.

Ultimately, the responsibility of the Analytics Engineer is to increase the speed and efficiency of common data team workflows.

Below are some examples of how this can be achieved:

  • Collaborate with engineers and the data team on efficient ingestion of data into our data warehouse.
  • Deliver/review new automation frameworks within the team.
  • Work on efficient storage of our data in the data warehouse, identifying performance improvements from query to table redesign.
  • Write quality ELT code with an eye towards performance and maintainability.
  • Introduce and develop tools that help data scientists and analysts work more efficiently.
  • Empower other analysts to use and contribute to our ELT frameworks, developing their skills with mentoring and pairing.
  • Contribute to our internal Python and R libraries, driving best practice.
  • Improve the overall data team's workflow through knowledge sharing, proper documentation, and code review.

Required:

  • You enjoy abstracting, generalizing, and creating efficient, scalable solutions where they are needed.
  • You are curious, from new tools in the data world to what is the right business definition for this metric.
  • You are highly collaborative and communicative.
  • Strong SQL skills and transforming data.
  • Experience with collaborative data and software development via git, and you're comfortable in the command line.
  • Experience deploying code/models to production, ideally via automated deployments.
  • Experience with Data Warehouse Schema Design.
  • Familiarity with using analytics to answer business questions.

Desirable:

  • Experience with python and orchestration tools such as Airflow.
  • Experience with dbt or a similar tool.
  • Experience with using automated deployment pipelines.
  • Experience with distributed compute tools, such as Spark.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, similar cloud providers and tools also a plus.
  • Familiarity with agile data ops development processes, unit testing, source control, continuous integration, etc.
  • Experience with data visualisation tools such as PowerBI.

About M-KOPA

At M-KOPA, our aim is to increase access to life-improving technologies at huge scale. We do this through an innovative credit model – pay-as-you-go asset financing – of which M-KOPA was an early global pioneer. With offices in Nairobi, Kampala, Lagos, and London, M-KOPA serves over 1 million low-income households in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since its commercial launch in 2012, M-KOPA has made its name in off-grid solar power, providing customers with solar panels and solar-powered lights, televisions, radios, fridges, and more – this is often our customers' first access to electricity.

M-KOPA's affordable credit model can also be applied to assets beyond off-grid solar power, and in 2019, we began providing credit for smartphones, which enables our customers to move from feature phones to smartphones and improve their connectivity, communication, and information access. Today, smartphone financing is a rapidly growing business line – with enormous opportunities for innovation and increasing our customer impact.

M-KOPA currently employs over 1,000 full-time staff across its operating countries. We value progress, innovation, pragmatism, collaboration, and – most of all – our customers. We have been well recognised for our pioneering business model and scale.
